Service Description

Investigate & experiment with Botanical/Eco dyeing & chemical dyeing. Decide which process provides you with the best results to suit your creativity. It may be one or the other or both. Being a little impatient when it comes to waiting for things to happen, Eco dyeing is no exception, it can take quite some time to get good results. Melanie has done a lot of experimenting with leaves in a heat press & has had some surprising outcomes. Not everyone will have a heat press, so as an alternative she used an old iron that worked equally. Now having mastered this quick technique it’s time to share with you. Chemical dyes give a vibrant colour to fabric & getting the balance right is key. It’s generally not repeatable so the results can be exciting. Natural fabrics are a must. Day 1 Learn a little of the science to create prints. How to print leaves onto fabric & paper the quick way using different leaves, making as many different prints as you can. Using the sewing machine to outline the leaves & hand stitching for decoration. Cutting & shaping the edges with a soldering iron you will learn how to hang the pieces once finished to get the most effective results. Day 2 Just using red, yellow & blue procion dyes we will dye fabric into the colour wheel. We will be doing a few more techniques as well, to obtain some beautiful colours & patterns on the fabrics. You’ll learn how to prepare the fabric & use different techniques to make unusual patterns. Requirements At least 2 metres of cotton fabric (it must be cotton or any other natural fabric as the dyes do not work on synthetic fabrics such as polyester). If you have more, bring it, as you will have time to try different dyeing techniques. 4 buckets or washing-up bowls that can hold (a pint) 0.57 litres of water Wooden spoon, pegs, elastic bands and string 2 x empty 1 litre or 75cl plastic bottles 36 x plastic pint cups 1 x bag of salt and soda crystals (you will not use all of it) Throw away Aluminium roasting trays Polythene bags to take wet fabric home Sewing machine with a darning foot for free motion stitching, pedal & manual. Cancellation Policy

Cancellations & Refunds Bookings for the workshops are made months in advance, therefore it can be difficult for me to resell any places at short notice. Workshops require a great deal of planning, financial commitment, supplies and tools, as well as paying staff. As a result, cancellations can result in lost revenue. This will greatly impact on the business. Ideally, I don’t want either of us to be out of pocket. You can cancel your space on a workshop up to two weeks before it takes place. This two-week period allows me the necessary time to try and find someone to fill your place which I will endeavour to do through word of mouth and social media. If I can fill your space you will receive a full refund minus £10 admin fee, to deal with the process of issuing your refund and finding an alternative person to fill your space. However, please appreciate if I am unable to find someone to take your place, you will not receive a refund. I do understand that there are sometimes unavoidable situations so am happy to discuss any exceptional circumstances you may have. To cancel your place on a workshop, please provide me with a written notice via email; Unless I have acknowledged your request, you shouldn’t consider your request delivered! If I don’t respond within three working days, then please send a follow-up email or call me. Refunds will be made in the same way as the payment was made, ie. Payments paid by a credit card can only be refunded to the same card. Cancellations by Fabric Paper Scissors I am entitled to cancel any group or workshop at any time subject to the repayment of any deposit and fees received in respect of the booking which has been cancelled. In the unlikely event of a cancellation by myself or a guest tutor, I will provide a full refund within 5 days of the workshop date. My liability is only for the cost of the class. If the class is cancelled, you are liable for any costs incurred by you including materials purchased in advance, travel or accommodation.
